About the Republic Square

Yerevan is the capital and largest city of Armenia, known for its beautiful Republic Square, the Cascade complex, and the historic Matenadaran library. The city combines ancient Armenian heritage with modern urban development and serves as the cultural heart of Armenia.

Designed by architect Alexander Tamanyan as the centerpiece of his 1924 general plan for the capital, the square was built up in stages from the late 1920s, with Government House completed by the early 1940s and the National Gallery and History Museum block finished in the 1970s. Its tufa façades in pink, cream and black tie the ensemble to local stone and to Armenian medieval ornament. Known as Lenin Square in the Soviet period, it held a Lenin monument from 1940 until its removal in 1991, after which the space took its present name. Today it hosts state ceremonies, concerts and protests, including the 2018 demonstrations, and its fountains draw crowds through the summer evenings.
