About the Opera House

Sydney is Australia's largest city, known for its iconic Opera House, beautiful harbor, and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The city combines stunning natural beauty with modern urban development, featuring world-class beaches and vibrant cultural scene.

Danish architect Jørn Utzon won an international competition in 1957 to design a performing arts venue on Bennelong Point, a site once occupied by Fort Macquarie tram depot. Construction began in 1959 and ran far over budget and schedule; Utzon resigned in 1966 after disputes with the New South Wales government and never returned to see the finished building. Queen Elizabeth II opened it on 20 October 1973. Its shell-shaped roof vaults, clad in over a million Swedish-made tiles, made the structure instantly recognisable in photographs of Sydney Harbour, and it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2007. Today it appears routinely in tourism imagery, New Year's Eve broadcasts and civic commemorations for the city.
