About the Swan

Bruges is a picturesque medieval city in Belgium, known for its beautiful canals and iconic swans. The city combines stunning Gothic architecture with romantic waterways, featuring the famous Markt square, the beautiful Belfry tower, the historic Church of Our Lady, and the charming swans that grace the city's canals.

Swans on the canals of Bruges are tied to the execution of Pieter Lanchals, a magistrate and treasurer loyal to Maximilian of Austria, who was beheaded in 1488 during the city's revolt against Habsburg rule. Lanchals means roughly "long neck," and his family arms are said to have carried a swan. According to a widely repeated local legend, Maximilian punished Bruges by ordering it to keep swans on its waters in perpetuity; this account is traditional rather than documented, and historians treat the decree as unverified. Swans have nonetheless been kept and tended on the canals for centuries, are municipally cared for and marked, and function today as a recognized emblem of the city and a reminder of its Burgundian past.
