Burgas is Bulgaria's fourth-largest city and its gateway to the Black Sea, best known for the pier stretching from the Sea Garden into open water. Rebuilt in the 1980s on the site of an early twentieth-century wooden bridge, the two-tiered walkway ends in an open platform where locals dive into the waves in summer and watch ships glide toward the port. Free of shops and traffic, the pier is simply a promenade over the sea — and the enduring emblem of the city.
