Zagreb is the capital and largest city of Croatia, known for its iconic St. Mark's Church - a medieval church with a distinctive colorful tiled roof featuring the coats of arms of Croatia, Dalmatia, and Slavonia. The city combines medieval charm with Central European culture, featuring the historic Upper Town, the beautiful Ban Jelačić Square, the impressive Zagreb Cathedral, and the stunning St. Mark's Church that symbolizes the city's rich architectural heritage.

Standing on St. Mark's Square in the Upper Town, the parish church of St. Mark dates from the 13th century and carries a 14th-century Gothic portal, but its recognition rests largely on its roof, tiled in 1880 during a restoration associated with Friedrich Schmidt and Hermann Bollé. The glazed tiles form two coats of arms: the medieval arms of Croatia, Dalmatia and Slavonia on one side, and the emblem of the city of Zagreb on the other, tying the building directly to civic and national identity. The square around it holds the Croatian Parliament and the government's Banski dvori, so the church regularly appears as a backdrop to political events and in images representing the capital.
