About the Barbary Macaque

The Barbary macaques on the Rock of Gibraltar are the only wild monkey population in Europe. Local tradition holds that British rule of the territory lasts only as long as the macaques remain, a belief taken seriously enough that Winston Churchill ordered the troop replenished in 1942 when numbers fell to a handful. Several hundred now live on the upper Rock.
