About the Arch

Tijuana is a major city in Baja California, Mexico, known for its iconic Tijuana Arch - a symbol of the city and its border location. The city combines Mexican culture with international influences, featuring vibrant markets, cultural festivals, and the famous Avenida Revolución.

Officially named the Reloj Monumental de Tijuana, and often called the Arco del Milenio, the steel arch was inaugurated on November 30, 2001 on Avenida Revolución, with its bases at the junction with Calle Primera (Argüello). It was proposed by Mayor Francisco "Kiko" Vega de Lamadrid during his 1998–2001 term to mark the new millennium and revive the downtown tourist district and Plaza Santa Cecilia; a citizen competition chose the "Reloj Monumental Tijuana 2000" design by architects Leodegario Silva López, Edgar Iván Rodríguez Llerenas and Moisés López Smith. At roughly 60 meters, it is visible across the city and from parts of San Diego County. The original clock failed and was replaced in February 2015 by a Samsung-donated screen. It was contested from the start, yet now functions as a gateway marker for the border city.
