About the Independence Monument

Kyiv is the capital and largest city of Ukraine, known for its iconic Independence Monument, rich Slavic heritage, and beautiful Orthodox churches. The city combines ancient history with modern European culture, featuring the golden-domed St. Sophia Cathedral, Maidan Nezalezhnosti, and vibrant cultural scene.

Rising from Maidan Nezalezhnosti, the white column topped by a gilded female figure holding a viburnum branch was unveiled in August 2001 for the tenth anniversary of Ukraine's 1991 declaration of independence, with sculpture by Anatoliy Kushch. It stands on the square where a Soviet-era monument to the October Revolution had been dismantled in 1991, so the column reads as a direct replacement of one political order by another. The figure is commonly called Berehynia, a protective spirit, though that identification is an informal popular label rather than an official one and is disputed. Because the square hosted the 2004 Orange Revolution and the 2013–14 Euromaidan protests, images of the column now serve as shorthand for Kyiv and for Ukrainian statehood.
