Port Vila is the capital and largest city of Vanuatu, an archipelago nation in the South Pacific. The traditional mask represents the rich cultural heritage of Vanuatu's indigenous Melanesian people. These ceremonial masks are central to Vanuatu's kastom (custom) culture, used in traditional rituals and storytelling, reflecting the deep spiritual connection of the ni-Vanuatu people to their ancestors.

No verifiable evidence exists that a "Port Vila Traditional Mask" is genuinely a symbol of Port Vila, Vanuatu. Vanuatu's best-documented mask traditions belong elsewhere in the archipelago, particularly to Malakula, where overmodelled masks and headdresses are made for grade-taking and secret-society rites such as Nalawan and Nimangki, and to Ambrym, associated with the Rom dance. Port Vila, on Efate, is the administrative and commercial capital, and the emblems officially tied to the nation are the flag adopted at independence on 30 July 1980 and its namele fern and boar's tusk motifs. Masks appear in Port Vila mainly through the National Museum, festivals and tourist markets rather than as a local civic emblem.
