Barcelos is a historic town in northern Portugal, famous for the legendary Galo de Barcelos (Rooster of Barcelos) - one of the most recognizable symbols of Portugal. According to folklore, a roasted rooster miraculously rose from a judge's dinner plate to prove an innocent pilgrim's innocence. This colorful ceramic rooster, traditionally decorated with hearts and vibrant patterns, has become an emblem of Portuguese culture, faith, and good luck, found in homes and souvenir shops worldwide.

Legend, rather than documented history, explains the rooster's tie to Barcelos: a pilgrim bound for Santiago de Compostela was condemned for theft and declared that a roasted cockerel on the judge's table would crow to prove his innocence, which it reportedly did. The tale is traditionally connected to the Cruzeiro do Senhor do Galo, a late-medieval stone cross now held in the town's archaeological museum, though the carving's original meaning is debated and the story itself cannot be verified. Barcelos potters, working in the long-established ceramics tradition of the Minho region, turned the motif into painted clay figures during the twentieth century, and these spread as a souvenir representing both the town and Portugal generally.
