About the Castle

Leiria is a historic city in central Portugal, famous for its impressive medieval castle that dominates the city's skyline. The Leiria Castle, built in the 12th century, represents the city's strategic importance in Portuguese history and serves as a symbol of medieval architecture and royal heritage.

Perched on a hill above the Lis river, the fortress was raised around 1135 on the orders of Afonso Henriques, Portugal's first king, as a frontier stronghold against Muslim-held territory to the south, and the settlement that grew beneath its walls became the town of Leiria. King Dinis, who held cortes in the town in 1254 era successors' tradition, turned the site into a royal residence, and the keep and the palace loggia associated with his reign and that of later monarchs still dominate the skyline. Largely ruined by the nineteenth century, it was restored from 1915 under the architect Ernesto Korrodi. Today it functions as the city's chief monument and visitor attraction.
