About the Big Ben

London is the capital of England and the UK, known for its rich history, iconic landmarks like Big Ben and the Tower Bridge, and world-class museums. The city is a global center for finance and culture.

Cast at the Whitechapel Bell Foundry in 1858, the great bell of the Great Clock of Westminster first sounded in July 1859, part of the Palace of Westminster rebuilt by Charles Barry and Augustus Pugin after the fire of 1834. Whether the name honours Commissioner of Works Benjamin Hall or the prizefighter Benjamin Caunt is disputed. Its association with the city grew through broadcasting: the BBC has transmitted the chimes since 31 December 1923, and they marked wartime bulletins after the Commons chamber was destroyed in May 1941 while the clock tower stood. Renamed the Elizabeth Tower in 2012, it now serves as visual shorthand for London and for Parliament in news coverage worldwide.
