About the Christ Statue

Vung Tau is a coastal city in southern Vietnam, crowned by the towering Christ of Vung Tau statue atop Mount Nho. Standing 32 meters tall with arms stretching 18 meters wide, it is one of the tallest Christ statues in the world. Built between 1974 and 1993, the statue gazes over the South China Sea from Small Mountain, offering panoramic views of the city's beaches and fishing harbors below.

Standing on Mount Nhỏ (Small Mountain), also called Tao Phùng, the statue of Christ the King known in Vietnamese as Tượng Chúa Kitô Vua was begun by the Vietnamese Catholic Church in March 1974, then left unfinished for years amid the country's political upheaval, with work resuming and the monument inaugurated in the mid-1990s; sources differ on the completion date, giving 1993 or 2 December 1994. It rises 32 metres on a 4-metre platform, for 36 metres total, with arms spanning about 18.3 metres and an internal staircase of 133 steps leading to balconies on the shoulders. Reached by more than 800 stone steps past 14 Stations of the Cross, it is one of Vietnam's largest religious structures and a pilgrimage and viewpoint site drawing visitors from across the country.
