About the Eiffel Tower

The iconic Eiffel Tower, a wrought-iron lattice tower located on the Champ de Mars in Paris. Built in 1889, it stands 324 meters tall and has become a global cultural icon of France and one of the most recognizable structures in the world.

Completed in 1889 as the entrance arch to the Exposition Universelle, which marked the centenary of the French Revolution, the tower was built between 1887 and 1889 by Gustave Eiffel's company, from a concept by engineers Maurice Koechlin and Émile Nouguier with architect Stephen Sauvestre, and was inaugurated on 31 March 1889. A group of writers and artists publicly protested the project in 1887, and the structure's 20-year permit made removal possible; its usefulness as a radiotelegraphy mast in the early 1900s helped secure its survival. At 300 metres it stood as the world's tallest structure until 1930. Today it is one of the most visited paid monuments worldwide and a standard shorthand for the city in photographs and film.
