Munich is the capital and largest city of Bavaria, Germany, known for its rich cultural heritage and traditional Bavarian culture. The city combines historic architecture with modern development, featuring the iconic Marienplatz, the famous Hofbräuhaus, the beautiful English Garden, and the annual Oktoberfest celebration.

Munich's name derives from the medieval phrase "apud Munichen" — "at the monks' place" — recorded in 1158 when Emperor Frederick Barbarossa's Augsburg arbitration confirmed Duke Henry the Lion's market on the Isar. A hooded monk holding a book appeared on the city's seal from 1239, and the oath-book figure of 1304 shows him with a raised hand. Over the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries the engraved figure grew smaller and more childlike, and by the nineteenth century it was called the Münchner Kindl, usually shown as a girl. The book is generally read as a gospel or oath book, though that interpretation is traditional rather than documented. The figure still marks the city's coat of arms, civic emblems and the Oktoberfest parade.
